The Department of Collegiate Education,
Government of Kerala came into existence in the year 1957 as a controlling
authority of Government Colleges in Kerala. Later the administrative
jurisdiction of the department was widened by the inclusion of music,
training and physical education colleges and the students hostel
attached to the Government colleges. As a result of the introduction
of direct payment system the colleges managed by various private
agencies were also brought under the control of the department from
1972. Later the administrative jurisdiction of the Department was

The
Department looks after the administration of the 47 Government
Colleges including the Music, Training and Physical Education
Colleges and also implements the scheme for direct payment of
salaries in respect of 178 private colleges. In addition to the
service matters of about 20,000 personnel - teaching and non-teaching
- this department maintains P.F accounts of the private college
staff. Various Central and State scholarship schemes are also
implemented by the department. Further the department has an increasingly
important role to play in developmental matters utilizing the
funds available from the Central and State Government as well
as from the UGC, 100% CSS and other sources.
